MUCC 20TH ANNIVERSARY 97-17 Tour Final, Zepp Diver City Tokyo
Date: 2017.05.13
Artist:   MUCC
Date of Concert: 2017.04.15
2017 is an important year for MUCC, as the band is celebrating its 20th anniversary. A 20 years long career is quite an achievement, especially for a band starting from Visual Kei and still somewhat considered part of the genre: the two packed up days at Zepp Diver City Tokyo were a testament of how many people have come to love this band over the 20 years span. The setlist also showed some differences among the two days, so that both people who could attend twice and those who could only go once could enjoy the live to the fullest.

On the second day, the stage opened to rainbow lights and the cover of MUCC's 2017 most recent full album, [Myakuhaku]: a cross decorated with intricate, symbolic ornaments like a skull, dragons and a hornet. Vocalist Tatsuro started the live speaking in his low voice through the song by the same name, before a loud boom woke the audience up into the reality of MUCC's energetic gigs, with a quartet of loud and breathtaking songs one after the other.

"We're MUCC - announced the vocalist after the first bunch of songs, as if people didn't already know - Today is the tour final! Thank you all for coming!"

Since the whole tour was a celebration of the anniversary, MUCC had a very complicated system to give hints on the albums included in each live - the very last song of one live would become a hint of one of the albums to be played in the following live together with [Myakuhaku]. Given that the last song of the 14th was [Zetsubou], the 15th included songs from one of MUCC's beloved classic, their 2002 release [Homura Uta] - for example [Mae he], for which Tatsuro played the harmonica in front of a bewitched audience. With a such a long career, one could appreciate the different shades of MUCC through their different compositions.

Songs span from the rawer, intense, barer old pieces like the heartwrenching [Kimi ni Sachi Are] or the deep bass lines and moshing of [Suimin] to the more traditionally rock-ish tracks of latest years, like [ENDER ENDER] and [CLASSIC], or the bittersweet atmosphere of [Heide]. While MUCC fans might have heard the older songs countless time, they always feel new and refreshing, as comparing the current versions to the original ones can give one an idea of the band's growth over the years.

Right after [Heide], Tatsuro spoke once again to the audience. "I'm really tired...- he announced laughing - Today is really the tour final! But it's not the end of entertaining things, as we will be participating in a Nico Nico event soon... and then we are going to Budokan in June! I will never forgive those who don't come. I seriously won't!". Bassist YUKKE also commented that they had started the tour in winter, but it was now already spring, and that it felt good to do an album tour after a very long time.

After taking a picture with the audience, the band sped through the second part of the main setlist, closing it off with [Fuka], where lights played it with the audience dying it red and then leaving in the dark, pacing illumination with the drums' rhythm. The audience probably didn't notice on the spot, but the main set span exactly through 20 songs.

The members came back with different clothing for the encore, with Tatsurou resembling a devil covered in red, and the background had been changed to a marble-like black and white. The encore opened with the bass-heavy [Moumoku de arugayue no sogaikan], a great surprise for the fans, and went straight into the folkish punk mood of [Shoufu]. And as usual, the whole Zepp Tokyo sat down before the jump for [Ranchu].

"Tokyo! - screamed guitarist Miya after the song - Let's have a match with the past! Yesterday we said 'Let's have a match with the future' and since you got really wild, today you won against the past! In this tour we face a 20 years long past, but let's not worry about the past or the future either! There is only today! Are you ready?". Fans responded enthusiastically to his call, headbanging like crazy to the beats of [1997], and the live ended on a quieter note with the heavenly [Shangri-La]

As announced by Tatsurou himself, MUCC will play at Nippon Budokan on June 20th and 21st of this year. Tickets for overseas fans are already available, don't forget to purchase yours here! https://ticket.rakuten.co.jp/special/music/MUCC
